Design Challenge: Giant’s Causeway

March 16, 2009

In my recent interview with David Perry, he mentioned a wonderful place called Giant’s Causeway which has some pretty far flung tales behind it.  Brian Green at Psychochild is running a design challenge this week on the very subject.  The best suggsetions will be posted here later on in the week.

Having been to Giant’s Causeway, and spent a month in N. Ireland during troubling times in the early 80’s, when U2 was still an edgy new wave band, I found Dave’s article very interesting. Ireland is so full of rich story ideas and ideas for games that it’s actually quite amazing there have been so few games based on Irish lore/mythos. Of course you see the occasional mention of leprechauns, banshees, etc. but rarely a plot that specifically target’s Irish myth, like the creation myth of Giant’s Causeway, etc.
I’m also not surprised to hear David say he’d prefer to keep Irish history in the libraries and not up on screen or in a game. I found the Northern Irish people I met (both Protestant and Catholic) always wanting to push forward and–if possible–try to forget about the past, even when the past was quite literally staring them in the face.
For example, I find the story of Hugh O’Neill and the Irish Earls to be an amazing bit of history, and yet I can’t think of a single thing in the popular culture that targets the “‘Flight of the Earls.”
Anyway, interesting topic and would love to hear more…
