How to Tell if You Are a Veteran Game Player

July 30, 2008

Today, I physically picked up the World of Warcraft Board Game to move it from one cabinet to another. That started this post.

Symptoms of Veteran Game Players

  • You pick up a game box, and it feels heavy. You decide it must be a good game.
  • You were AWD way before arrow keys or a mouse appeared.
  • Tiltowait brings back fond, fond warm and fuzzy memories.
  • Mapping your own dungeons is fun, damn it.
  • On at least one occasion, you looked at your GPS and thought, “Cloth map.”
  • You have a strong opinion on hex vs. square grids.
  • You can recall the names of at least 5 games you finished without saved games, because there was no saved game option.
  • Your first 10 seconds in a graphical MMO were followed by the distinct feeling that all these people should not be in here (or that the game was going to crash any minute).
  • 8 Bit is Beautiful

    * If the rules are numbered then the game must be good.

    “Cloth map” : )
So that’s why I like the Google maps pins…

    * The word “casual” makes you twitch.

    – You still value quarters at much more that 25 pennies.
    – You look at a height map created via mid-point displacement and immediately think of Starflight.
    – You still compare every science fiction game to TradeWars.
    – You yell at kids saying, “Back in MY day, ninja ALL had terrible stats!”

Pfft. AWD is for noobs. Real veterans use HJKL.

    – You remember what it was like when some of the most popular games of the day had no graphics at all, just text. (Forget “8-bit”.)
    – You recognize “cardboard chits and hexes” as a genre.
    – You started playing Dungeons & Dragons before it started numbering its new editions.

    I have never played D&D. šŸ˜¦

    Hopefully, not yet.

Heh, I’m kind of amazed at how many of these I actually identify with. …And I definitely am all over the statement “8-Bit is beautiful”.

But Ian, as much love and memories I have with cardboard chits and hexes… their own genre? Really? šŸ˜‰

The remake of Wizardry (1) from CGA, little “graphic” box in the corner to Wiz 3 style was and is a travesty.
