Lost Garden: Turning Skills into Games

July 28, 2008

Danc over at Lost Garden has a great article up on how skills – everyday, seemingly mundane skills – can be turned into games: What activities can be turned into games?

Games like Wii Fit or Brain Training may seem exceptional strokes of genius, but in reality they are merely the tiny tip of an immense iceberg. Almost any human skill, be it physical, cultural, political or economic can be turned into a game that enlightens and enables.

In particular, take a look at the way he breaks down skills into six handy bite-sized pieces. It’s great stuff, and practically a game design exercise all on its own.

This is an interesting read. I believe we will continue to see brain training games develop into two areas: (1) games designed for entertainment that have the appearance of brain training like Brain Age games and (2) games that are really about getting smarter like Lumosity, Posit Science, etc.

    Best,
