Challenges for Game Designers is Done!

July 26, 2008

Challenges for Game Designers is at long last finished! It’s a design challenge boot camp in book form and reminiscent of the design sessions we had when we first began working together in 2004.

Ian Schreiber and I wrote it over the last nine or so months in response to a thread on the IGDA’s Education SIG mailing list. In that thread, several individuals talked about a problem familiar to many designers – you lack some critical component to make a digital game, be it programmers, artists or the software necessary. So, what could they do – what could we do – to start making games anyway?

Precisely what Ian and I have done for years – make games anyway. Fortunately for designers and for game design, no electricity is required of the challenges in this book. Using all non-digital methods to practice skills used in video game design, Challenges for Game Designers includes 21 chapters on a whole range of topics.

Educators can request a free review copy on the site. For the rest of you not lucky enough to get free review copies, the book is actually affordable on purpose ($16.49 at last check on Amazon.com). Having spent a metric truckload of money on various design books, Ian and I wanted something that carried a price tag we wouldn’t feel guilty about, and were pleased our publisher honored that request.

@Dave and Rasmus – Thanks! We’re pretty excited about it. As you know (having had your significant part to play), it’s a massive collaborative effort. That’s Blair Cooper’s cover, too.

If this is THE book you talked about back in Crit, I am definitely picking this up. Can’t wait to read it.

@Daniel – it is indeed that book.

    I must buy this.

Yes, I will read it, too. Eventually… sadly, reading and I don’t get along too well. It’s not exactly something I feel too comfortable talking about. It’s on-again, off-again.

Here’s a question: have you ever been asked to sign a book you wrote?

I’m digging the table of contents. I’ve added it to my wishlist.

I’ve already bought it! I mean, pre-bought it! And am looking forward to laying my hands on it. 🙂
